Check the hallmark
Look for the purity stamp and a BIS hallmark with a HUID. Ask for a bill that shows weight, purity and making charges separately.

Divide the price by the weight and compare it with our live rate. The difference is the seller's premium, so compare it between shops.
Bank vs jeweller
Bank coins are usually genuine but often more expensive and hard to sell back. Jewellers and refiners' own coins are usually easier to resell.

Why do jewellers charge more than the rate shown here?
The headline rate is the typical jeweller rate for plain 999 silver, before GST. For coins, shops add making charges (a few percent for plain coins, more for designer or coloured coins) plus 3% GST. The market rate shown under it is the value of the silver itself, so compare your quote with it to see exactly how much premium you are paying.
What is the difference between 999 and 925 silver coins?
999 (fine silver) coins are 99.9% pure silver and are best for investment and gifting. 925 (sterling silver) is 92.5% silver alloyed with copper for hardness — common in jewellery and some coins. For the same weight, a 925 coin contains about 7.4% less silver, so it should cost less.
How can I check whether a silver coin is genuine?
Buy from reputed sellers, and check for a purity stamp (999 or 925) and a BIS hallmark with a HUID code on Indian pieces. Real silver is not magnetic, melts ice unusually quickly, and gives a clear ringing sound when tapped. Weigh the coin — fakes are often slightly under or over the stated weight.
